ECOLOGY AND BIODIVERSITY
Ecology
Ecology, which is the science that examines the relations of living things with each other and their environment, has passed into our language as environmental science. In this definition, what is meant to be expressed with living things is; communities of humans, animals and plants. The suitable environment that a living thing needs in order to survive and continue its generation is called the environment. Factors such as air, water, light and soil make up the environment. The definition of ecosystem is used for the entire living and non-living environment. Ecology; It is closely related to branches of science such as botany, zoology, microbiology, physiology, plant nutrition, anatomy, morphology, pathology, pedology, geology, geomorphology, mineralogy, physics, chemistry, meteorology and climatology. However, ecology; It differs from other natural sciences in some points in terms of research subject, methods and purposes. Ecology, which deals with the basic issues that are common to all living things and that can affect living things, examines not the specific organs of a living thing and the vital processes of these organs, but the vital environment of living things and their mutual relations with other living things. Ecology is concerned with all types of biodiversity. Ecology; It is also concerned with the role of a small microorganism in the transformation of a nutrient and the effects of rainforests on the atmosphere. All living things need to interact with their environment in order to survive. For this reason, ecology is a science that is very important in terms of both the environment and the sustainability of life.
Biodiversity
Biodiversity refers to the diversity of life forms all over the world and the ecological processes that are part of them. Living things; They need clean water, fertile soil, clean air, nutrients and other substances to survive. Fungi, plants, animals and other living things that provide all of this form biodiversity. As the biodiversity rate in a particular region increases, ecological services also increase at the same rate. As biodiversity increases, services such as material circulation and energy flow in ecosystems take place more effectively, as a balanced and correct interaction between species must occur in order to ensure the increase. Conversely, if the diversity in the ecosystem decreases, ecosystem services also decrease at the same rate. At this point, ecosystem, species diversity and genetic diversity appear as three components that complement each other, provide the complexity and diversity of life on earth, and play an active role in the continuity of nature.
If we briefly explain the components of biodiversity;
Ecosystem Diversity: The name given to the continuous system formed by the interaction of living and non-living beings in a particular region with each other. ecosystem diversity; It forms the mechanism of basic ecological processes needed by human beings such as oxygen, water circulation, energy flow, soil production. Species Diversity: The diversity of species in a region, area, habitat or the whole world is called species diversity. It refers to the number of living species present. Species can be grouped according to their common characteristics. The worldwide variety of species is estimated at between 10 and 80 million; however, only 1.6 million species have been identified and named by scientists to date. Genetic Diversity: Each species consists of its own unique genetic compositions. Thus, a member of a species may have different genetic compositions and be in different populations. In order for genetic diversity to continue in a healthy way, different populations of a species must also be protected.
Benefits of Biodiversity
In addition to the continuation of human life, biodiversity is very important in order to ensure the continuity of the level of agriculture and animal husbandry, and even in technology. While the abundance of plant and animal species provides economic gain, it also leads to development in areas such as clean water, clean air, forestry and agriculture. Keeping ecosystems in balance, livable earth and human health are possible thanks to biodiversity.
Benefits of Plant Diversity
Plants prevent erosion, add organic matter to the soil, clean the air, and play an important role in the continuity of the ecosystem by allowing other living things to both feed and shelter. Vegetables and fruits such as buckwheat, pine tree, clover, mountain ash, hawthorn, wild pear and jujube are used in medicine and are effective in making useful medicines and in a healthy life. Poplar, juniper, oak, pine and acorn type trees grow uniquely in our country and provide great benefits to forestry.
Benefits of Animal Diversity
Since the first humans, animals have been domesticated and used as a food source. Some insects contribute to the pollination of plants and the decomposition of organic matter into the soil. Fish species such as trout, sea bass and mullet that are unique to our country are; Species such as sheep, goats and cows ensure the continuity of animal husbandry.
Benefits of Ecosystem Diversity People relieve their daily stress and anxiety by going to a place where they can be alone with nature and rest themselves in this way. Nature-based tourism is called eco-tourism and has gained a lot of importance recently. The number of people who want to escape from negative factors such as the effect of technology on our daily life, the pressures and concerns in the business world, the noise, crowd and traffic in big cities and relax in the lap of nature has increased especially recently.
The sustainability of ecosystems depends on the diversity and health of the species living in them. The primary condition for the continuation of human life is the preservation of ecosystems. Biodiversity and ecosystems have their own unique values and right to exist, as well as their benefits to humans. We should protect them not for our own needs and needs, but because they have their own values and right to live like all living things.
Endemic Plant
Endemic, from the Greek word endomos, means native or belonging to that region. Any plant is an endemic plant if it spreads in a certain area. Species or genera that spread only in certain regions of the earth are called endemic. For example, Side cannabis (Orobanche sideana), which is distributed in the Side dune region, is among the endemic plants of the Antalya region and human activities on the dune area are the biggest threat to the future of the species.
